A Brief History of Amber

Amber is fossilized resin that comes from ancient trees. Most amber ranges from 16 to 90 million years old. In 2009 researches discovered one of the oldest pieces of amber dated back to 320 million years old. For over 10 thousand years people have been making Amber jewelry. This means it is most likely one of the first gems ever used in jewelry. Amber also is known to trap insects which has given scientists and archeologists a look into the past. Over 1000 extinct insect species have been identified due to the preservation in amber.

      There are five classes of Amber. Yellow Amber which is found through out the world. It varies in shades from Yellow to Brown. One of the most prized amber's is known as "Baltic Amber", which is a Golden Yellow color and dates back to 40 million years old. Black amber dating back to 50 million years accounts for about fifteen percent of the amber found. Green amber which comes from pine trees and dates back to the  pre-columbian times, has been found in South America during the Mayan civilization. It also has been found along the coast of Russia. White amber nick named " Bony " or " Royal White" is especially rare (about 1-2%). Red Amber, the second most rare amber nick named " Cherry Amber". Blue Amber which is very rare as well and has been found in the Dominican Republic.
